{"id":221,"date":"2021-05-20T16:08:40","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T16:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sectonproprod.wpengine.com\/?p=221"},"modified":"2021-05-20T17:12:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T17:12:14","slug":"message-from-the-chair-may-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/index.php\/2021\/05\/20\/message-from-the-chair-may-2021\/admin\/","title":{"rendered":"MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR \u2013 MAY 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/sectonproprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2-1024x484.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2-1024x484.png 1024w, https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2-768x363.png 768w, https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2-790x373.png 790w, https:\/\/sectiononprobono.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/SectionOnProbono_Header_MessageFromChair_SusanSchechter_v2.png 1333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color text-paragraph\" style=\"color:#216b97\"><strong><em><strong><em>These mountains that you are carrying, <\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><br><strong><em><strong><em>you were only supposed to climb<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size text-paragraph\">\u2013 Najwa Zebian, Lebanese-Canadian activist, author, speaker<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-paragraph\">Dear Law School Community Friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-paragraph\">As we honor and mourn the year of living and working remotely, it has really dawned on me the load we are all carrying.\u00a0 I will make the big leap and assume that everyone who is getting this newsletter is part of the AALS Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities Section because they care about students, their communities, and the legal profession.\u00a0 I know more than a few of you have gone beyond the climb and have taken on the burdens of your students, your communities, and the profession to try and ease someone else\u2019s burden and to meet an unmet need.\u00a0 When I heard Najwa Zabian\u2019s quote a few months into the remote world, I could not let it go \u2013 and to say it has supported, strengthened, and comforted me would be an understatement.\u00a0 Many days over the last year, I have wanted to curl up in a ball, watch another television series, or go out for a long walk with a dog friend, but I have stayed in front of my computer for a student, a supervisor, a meeting, knowing that I was not alone and only by supporting each other would we be able to take get through this time.\u00a0 We have so, so much work to do in meeting unmet legal needs, in beginning and continuing to raise the issues of racial injustice and the need for racial reckoning, and the critical need for having an earth that we can all live on \u2013 from climate change and the worsening of the \u2018natural\u2019 (<u>National Geographic<\/u>, that hotbed of radical theory, recently noted we needed to stop calling these natural disasters and recognize the role that man (sic) has played in these \u2018man-made\u2019 disasters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-paragraph\">For this message, I wanted to call out 3 new endeavors our section is carrying on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Thank you to the Collaboration Committee which held its 2<sup>nd<\/sup> AALS National Law School Pro Bono Call \u2013 we had a zoom room full of people sharing ideas and energy \u2013 our next one is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30, 11am\/pst \u2013 thank you Anna Davis (UC Irvine) and Laura Worstek (DePaul)!<\/li><li>Thank you to the Educational Enrichment Committee which held its 1st Inaugural Speaker Series with Alissa Rubin Gomez, from University of Houston, talking about her forthcoming article \u2013 <u>Demand-Side Justice:\u00a0 Legal Literacy to Close the Gap<\/u> \u2013 we had over 30 people on the call, including a large handful of legal services practitioners \u2013 so great to have all listening and contributing to the conversation.\u00a0 Thank you to Kelli Neptune (Howard) and Eliza Vorenberg (Roger Williams Univ.)!<\/li><li>Thank you to the Membership Committee who are bringing up a resource to welcome new folks to our Section and provide them with some leads on resources, including people to help \u2013 thank you Pam Robinson (Univ. of So.
